Sony and Microsoft look to match the hype with PS5 and Xbox launches - Financial Times

sony.indah.link

When Sony launched the PlayStation 4 in November 2013, some countries did orderly time-slots and formal lotteries. Others did enormous serpentine queues. In some, there were stampeding crowds and shelf-toppling mayhem.

The scenes, which were followed a few days later by similar scrambles for the Microsoft Xbox One, had all the ingredients of classic, adrenaline-fuelled console launches. There was over-demand, limited supply, the hardest of hardcore fans and the grandiose promise of a new era for a global games industry now worth an estimated $145bn a year.

Seven years later, as Microsoft prepares to launch its Xbox Series X and Sony its PlayStation 5 on November 10 and November 12 respectively, both companies hope they can match the hype for products that simultaneously offer the sort of opportunities that come round only rarely, and some complex risks.

“It’s the biggest console launch the industry has ever had,” said David Gibson, an analyst at Astris Advisory in Tokyo. He believes that, for Sony in particular, the combination of the coronavirus pandemic and the new console gives it a unique chance to push its games, music and movie businesses on to the one platform. “The big factor here . . . is that there is also an absence of other entertainment like live music, sport and cinema whereas games are interactive and readily available.”

These two big-ticket hardware launches are happening against a background of rapid change in the industry that some view as an existential threat to the likes of Xbox and PlayStation. As cloud technology and internet connections have improved, people are increasingly downloading or streaming games on their phones to play in real time.

Reflecting that shift, Hiroki Totoki, chief financial officer of Sony, told investors this week that the real battleground is not hardware. “I believe the essence of the competition is not the annual profits [from PS5] but how much we can expand the gaming universe over the longer term.”

Timeline showing of key games consoles

Microsoft’s gaming chief, Phil Spencer, said the two metrics he looks at “every morning” are not console sales but the number of players and how long they spend gaming. “We know with time, comes spending and revenue and the other pillars of the business.”

Between Sony and Microsoft, calculates Ampere Analysis, just under 9m consoles should be sold worldwide between now and the end of 2020, but this will be during the extraordinary conditions caused by the pandemic.

“We [Sony and Microsoft] will both be supply-constrained more than demand-constrained,” Mr Spencer told the Financial Times. “The battle for console demand will happen next holiday and beyond. In the beginning, I expect the shelves will be pretty empty.”

Some analysts calculate that, given the challenges of building and distributing its new machine in the current crisis, Sony could lose as much as $170 per PS5 it sells, and may not break even on the hardware for three years.

Microsoft has also warned investors that the Xbox launch will be a drag on overall gross margins this quarter, something Mr Spencer insists he is relaxed about. “It’s totally fine for us to subsidise console sales in order to gain a customer that, over the life of the console, [means] we can run a profitable business, which is what we’re doing,” he said.

Nonetheless, in the battle to get these sophisticated products to market in time for Christmas, supply chains have been reorganised, key game releases postponed, online pre-ordering systems have been chaotic and, in Sony’s home market of Japan, where the previous launch queues were the biggest, major electronics retailers have said such scenes will not be possible this time.

“The optics of a really big crowd trying to get a product, and the way that the public would view that brand as not being Covid-safe, is not a good look,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, games analyst at Ampere Analysis. While there will doubtless be efforts to whip up excitement online, “you won’t have that same launch buzz”, he said.

Sony’s new machine will cost $499. This is $100 more than the PS4, which has a global user base of more than 110m, though a diskless version will be available for $399. The new Xbox will cost the same, but with a digital-only version for $299.

Sony has played down the price rise, pointing to what it claims is its strongest ever line-up of games for the PS5 launch, such as Demon’s Souls and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Jim Ryan, Sony’s PlayStation chief, recently told the Financial Times the company expects to sell more PS5s in the year to March than in the equivalent period seven years ago, when the PS4 was launched.

But the pandemic has also changed the way games are made, with productivity falling because developers have had to work from home.

As a result, Microsoft has had to push back the latest version of the Xbox’s best-known games series, Halo Infinite, until next year.

Relying on third-party developers also looks more risky than it did. Square Enix, the group behind the hit Final Fantasy series, and French developer Ubisoft, maker of the Rainbow Six franchise, have both warned in recent weeks that Covid-19 restrictions have hit their pipeline of new games.

Sony acknowledges delays in some parts of the industry but played down the impact on the launch. Nonetheless, it is moving PS5 consoles made in China to the US by air rather than sea to ensure there are enough to sell at the launch. “We often use air freight for peak times of the year,” Sony’s Mr Ryan said.

Mr Spencer argued that the “biggest impact on profitability is the hardware that’s in the box”, but concedes that the logistics of a much bigger international launch — in 2013, the Xbox One was released in just 12 markets, compared with about 40 this time — adds to initial costs.

Air freight prices have surged during the pandemic, but the cost will be particularly high for the PS5 because of its large size, according to Hideki Yasuda, a games analyst at Ace Research Institute. At 4.5kg in weight and with a height of 39cm, depth of 26cm, and width of 10.4cm, the PS5 is one of the largest-ever consoles.

The transportation costs as well as high marketing fees for the launch mean Sony is anticipating operating profits in its gaming division will drop from ¥229bn ($2.2bn) in the first half of the financial year from March to ¥71bn in the second half.

Balancing out those risks, said Hirokazu Hamamura, gaming expert and senior adviser to the board at publishing company Kadokawa, is the big increase in gaming during the pandemic in the absence of other forms of entertainment.

Mr Ryan pointed to “massive increases” in player engagement, which have “exceeded anything that we’ve seen before . . . by significant double-digit percentage points”.

The pandemic has also changed the way people play games, with more users downloading games and using subscription services while stores were shut.

“Covid-19 has accelerated a shift for the gaming industry to subscription services and downloads that took a decade for the music industry when it shifted from CDs,” Mr Hamamura said.

Sony forces PS5 faceplate manufacturer to cancel orders and cease production - Gamesradar

sony.indah.link

A peripheral manufacturer has been ordered to stop selling PS5 faceplates by Sony.

Having already changed the company's name following a complaint from tech giant Sony, the firm has now also had demands to cease selling the product or it will "end up in court", with lawyers insisting that Sony's intellectual property also "extended to the faceplates".

"Before we launched, we did our due diligence and were of the opinion, that because Sony only had pending patents on the faceplates there would be no problem," PlateStation5.com – now rebranded as CustomizeMyPlates – told VGC.

"But after only a day of our website being live, Sony's lawyers asked us to change our name (at the time PlateStation5), due to trademark infringements. We thought this switch would be enough to keep everyone happy, and honestly were hoping so since we were already underway with our product development.

"But then Sony's lawyers told us it was their opinion, Sony's intellectual property extended to the faceplates, and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court," the email continued. "This all came to light yesterday and we are now cancelling and refunding all faceplate orders worldwide... we are extremely disappointed about this but we have no other option."

All existing pre-orders have now been cancelled and are in the process of being refunded to customers.

We're now weeks away from the PS5 launch, and we finally have all the details for Sony's next-gen console, including an amazing look at the PS5 UI at last. That joins info on the PS5 price, the PS5 launch games, and that all-important release date. For more, check out our guide to everything we know so far about the PS5.

ICYMI, Sony recently added a new icon to the PS4's Friend List that indicates what console your pals are currently playing on. Though easy to overlook at first, you'll notice it alongside the name of the game they're playing.

Here are all the PS5 games coming to Sony's next-gen system.

Sony Reveals PS5’s New Accessibility Features | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

sony.indah.link

Sony has revealed all of the different accessibility features will be available for the PlayStation 5. Video game companies like Sony have put much more effort over the last few years to focus more heavily on accessibility features for gamers with disabilities. According to Sony the Playstation 5 has many more features than the PlayStation 4 does.

Sony revealed awhile back that it wanted to make gaming much more accessible to all gamers, made pretty clear already by the new Activities feature shown off during the PlayStation 5 UI reveal. With the console's overhauled approach to console user experience, players who need help with a specific level or challenge in a game will be able to pull up an official walkthrough or hint from developers to help them. Games that choose to use this feature will be much more accessible to all of its players and make things easier for everyone involved, though there's little telling how much (if any) third-party developers will choose to make use of this casual player-friendly feature.

Now, Sony has revealed on its website that the PlayStation 5 will have a wide array of accessibility options other than hints and walkthroughs. Sony wants players with disabilities to have the option to customize their gaming experience to suit their needs. That means that the PlayStation 5 has text-to-speech capabilities, voice dictation for messages, a screen reader, as well as custom button assignments and many other different options. Those with various (but, sadly, not all) disabilies will potentially be able to find some way to meet their needs on the PlayStation 5.

Sony goes on to note that its studio Naughty Dog has put an impressive amount of work into making its last few games accessible to as many gamers as possible. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for example allowed players to play the game without using the right thumbstick or let players hold buttons down for certain actions rather than tapping them repeatedly. The Last of Us Part 2 took this accessibility approach to a new level, launching this year as one of the most accessible games in the medium's history. While Naughty Dog has made software strides toward making gaming available to all regardless of ability, Sony unfortunately is still far behind the curve compared to Xbox's Adaptive Controller in terms of hardware.

One of the most important things that video game companies need to work on is making their products accessible to everyone possible. All people should have the opportunity to enjoy video games if they so desire no matter what physical disabilities they have. Sony is definitely taking a step in the right direction with the PlayStation 5, and hopefully other studios will follow.

PS5 Faceplate Site Cancels Orders After Legal Threat From Sony - GameSpot

sony.indah.link

If you were hoping to customize your new PS5 with a fancy faceplate, you may have to wait for an official Sony solution. A company offering replacement PS5 plates in a variety of colors has canceled orders after being threatened with a lawsuit.

Speaking to VGC, a representative from Customize My Plates--which had been known as PlateStation5 until a few days ago--confirmed that it was canceling all plate orders. It cited Sony's legal threats as the reason behind both its name change, which Sony said infringed on its own trademarks, as well as the cancellations.

"… Sony's lawyers told us it was their opinion [that] Sony's intellectual property extended to the faceplates, and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court," the representative said.

It will be abandoning the console customization business, but it's unlikely Customize My Plates will be offering plate replacements in the future. Instead, it's currently offering controller and console skins, which are sheets of vinyl you can stick to the console itself. They do not replace the existing faceplates like the original components would have, and they're a little cheaper.

Because of how easy it is to remove the faceplates (it requires no tools to do so), Sony will most likely offer its own replacements in different colors down the line. It would certainly be easier than offering completely different colors for the consoles, which Sony has done in the past. The Xbox 360's first iteration featured a replaceable faceplate, as well. We're sure plenty of people want to make their PS5 camo, but they might not be able to find it later.

The PS5 launches November 12. As of now, it is only available in white, as is the DualSense controller. Check out or PS5 preorder guide for availability information on both the console and its accessories.

Report: Sony to buy Crunchyroll for nearly $1 billion - TNW

sony.indah.link

Crunchyroll, the popular anime streaming service, may soon have a new owner. According to a report by Nikkei, Sony is close to finalizing a deal to buy the service for about “more than 100 billion yen,” or about 955 million US dollars.

AT&T is Crunchyroll’s current parent company, having bought it in 2018. Though Crunchyroll isn’t quite the size of Hulu or Netflix, at about 70 million free subscribers (3 million paying) its specialized content could help Sony build strong foundations with a loyal audience. The company has already seen major success with the release of the animated Demon Slayer movie, which became the highest-grossing movie in Japan.

Anime’s clout is also evidenced by Netflix’s increasing forays into the category. And as noted by Nikkei, the anime market has been steadily increasing, worth about $21 billion globally in 2018, 1.5 times of what it was five years before that.

Hardware aside, Sony is of course already an entertainment mogul with its movies, games, and music; acquiring Crunchyroll would significantly expand its market in the TV arena.  Besides, it makes some sense for a Japanese company to own a service dedicated so heavily to anime.

Sony details the PlayStation 5’s accessibility features - NME

sony.indah.link

With the PlayStation 5’s launch imminent, Sony has outlined various accessibility features available on the console and DualSense controller.

In a blog post from the company, it detailed that all PS4 features will carry over to the PS5, including text to speech, inverting colours, and enabling custom button configurations. Going forward, the company is planning to add more in terms of making gaming more accessible for all gamers.

One of the biggest new features – which was outlined during the PS5’s user interface reveal – is speech to text capabilities. Users will be able to use speech to conjure messages on screen with the DualSense’s built-in microphone, negating the need to use the controller to manually type.

For those who are visually impaired, a screen reader is said to provide “blind and low vision users with options to hear on-screen text”, whilst also ensuring that “deaf and hard of hearing users can type text messages, which will be spoken out loud to other party members”. Both of these functions will support a range of languages.

With the custom button configurations and closed caption features of the PS4 making a return, the PS5 will now also be able to support colour correction, which Sony has said will give owners the ability “to adjust colour, and in supported games, game presets will allow users to customize their common settings in advance.”

Outside of the console, the DualSense will also be receiving some accessibility features. New features, notably the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, offer unique ways to experience games, such as the triggers locking in Deathloop when the gun jams. As a result, these functions can be tweaked or turned off entirely to ensure full accessibility.

Various games are also taking on more in regards to accessibility options. Both Among Us and Watch Dogs: Legion have worked to integrate more features to ensure more gamers are able to enjoy the titles.

Sony details new PS5 and DualSense controller accessibility settings - TechRadar

sony.indah.link

Ahead of the PS5’s November release date, Sony has detailed some of the accessibility settings that will be built in to the console and its DualSense controller at launch.

In an official SIE blog post, Sony has said that the accessibility settings currently available on the PS4, including closed captions, inverting colors, text to speech and custom button assignments, will also be present on PS5.

The post also details some of the new options that will be available to PlayStation 5 users. These include a voice dictation feature which will make it possible to input text without a virtual keyboard; a Screen Reader to give blind and low vision users the option of hearing on-screen text; and text-to-speech options so that deaf and hard of hearing users can send typed messages which will be spoken aloud to party members.

PS4 and more

These features will be supported in multiple languages at launch, including English, Japanese, German, Italian, France French, Canadian French, Spain Spanish and Latin American Spanish.

Sony has also stated that the PS5 will support user-adjustable color correction, with the option to create game presets so that users can customise their settings in advance for games which support this .

When it comes to the DualSense controller, Sony has said that it’ll be possible to reduce the force of the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers or turn it off entirely. Further to that, improvements have also been made to audio in order to “provide players with better spatial awareness.“

Both the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition will launch on November 12 in the USA, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Those living elsewhere (like the UK and Ireland) have to wait an additional week, with November 19 being the release date for the rest of the world.

We’ve had the chance to go hands-on with the PS5 already, and we’ll keep bringing more PS5 coverage in the run up to the console's launch.
