Sony has revealed all of the different accessibility features will be available for the PlayStation 5. Video game companies like Sony have put much more effort over the last few years to focus more heavily on accessibility features for gamers with disabilities. According to Sony the Playstation 5 has many more features than the PlayStation 4 does.
Sony revealed awhile back that it wanted to make gaming much more accessible to all gamers, made pretty clear already by the new Activities feature shown off during the PlayStation 5 UI reveal. With the console's overhauled approach to console user experience, players who need help with a specific level or challenge in a game will be able to pull up an official walkthrough or hint from developers to help them. Games that choose to use this feature will be much more accessible to all of its players and make things easier for everyone involved, though there's little telling how much (if any) third-party developers will choose to make use of this casual player-friendly feature.
Now, Sony has revealed on its website that the PlayStation 5 will have a wide array of accessibility options other than hints and walkthroughs. Sony wants players with disabilities to have the option to customize their gaming experience to suit their needs. That means that the PlayStation 5 has text-to-speech capabilities, voice dictation for messages, a screen reader, as well as custom button assignments and many other different options. Those with various (but, sadly, not all) disabilies will potentially be able to find some way to meet their needs on the PlayStation 5.
Sony goes on to note that its studio Naughty Dog has put an impressive amount of work into making its last few games accessible to as many gamers as possible. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for example allowed players to play the game without using the right thumbstick or let players hold buttons down for certain actions rather than tapping them repeatedly. The Last of Us Part 2 took this accessibility approach to a new level, launching this year as one of the most accessible games in the medium's history. While Naughty Dog has made software strides toward making gaming available to all regardless of ability, Sony unfortunately is still far behind the curve compared to Xbox's Adaptive Controller in terms of hardware.
One of the most important things that video game companies need to work on is making their products accessible to everyone possible. All people should have the opportunity to enjoy video games if they so desire no matter what physical disabilities they have. Sony is definitely taking a step in the right direction with the PlayStation 5, and hopefully other studios will follow.
The PlayStation 5 will be available in select countries on November 12, 2020 and globally on November 19. Pre-orders are available now.
