MLB The Show 21 Patch 9: Sony Drops Hammer On ‘Disrespectful’ Custom Content Creators - Forbes

The ninth patch for MLB The Show 21 was released on Saturday.

The latest update addressed several parts of the game, but also included an important note to its community regarding custom content creation in the vault.

Let’s take a quick look at the highlights and a deeper look at the community address item.

3 Elite Diamond Dynasty Catchers Get ‘Pop Time’ Quirk

The Ivan Rodriguez, Gary Carter and Johnny Bench cards didn’t have the Pop Time quirk prior to the update. Now the historically elite defensive catchers will have this added to their cards.

I’m not sure how much that will raise the cards’ values, but this element still needed to be fixed.

Other Game Mode Fixes

Across franchise, online head-to-head, Road to the Show, and in stadium and general presentation, there were many bugs and crashes addressed. You can read about all of them in detail at the link above.

MORE FOR YOU

Don’t Get Banned for “Bad Creations”

One of the great things about a powerful creation tool in video games is that it gives communities an opportunity to show their artistry and creativity within the parameters of a specific tool. Moreover, the best in-game creation suites allow users to share their content with their fellow players.

On the flipside, there will always be people who will choose to contaminate an otherwise awesome feature with sophomoric, mean-spirited and idiotic images/concepts that taint the experience of those looking for venom-less enjoyment of a video game.

These two factors create a conundrum for developers and publishers: Do we keep a really cool feature that our consumers love despite the negative usage of the tool, or do we scrap it because of fears of the negative imagery making its way to social media and being attributed to the game’s brand?

It can be a delicate situation, but thankfully, it appears Sony is deciding to keep their strong logo creation feature (for use in team rebranding and custom ballparks), while rooting out the negative elements and those responsible for spreading them.

Here is a look at the footnote added to the Patch 9 details:

“Since the launch of MLB the Show 21 we’ve seen some absolutely amazing content created in the logo and stadiums vaults. Every year we see things created with a level of detail that makes it way through the studio and leaves us in awe. We have some truly passionate and talented creators in our community, and we love to see the way they push our content creation tools further and further each year. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen some disrespectful creations as well. We want to be clear: this type of content has no place in MLB The Show, and to this date we’ve removed many of these creations and revoked the access to MLB The Show from the accounts that post such unacceptable content. Many of these bad creations were brought to our attention by the reports from our dedicated community, and for that we are forever grateful. On behalf of everyone here at San Diego Studio, a sincere THANK YOU to everyone in the community who has helped us remove such disrespectful and offensive content and is continuing to help us make MLB The Show a great place to play.”

I applaud Sony for making this decision and hope to see it consistently enforced until the word is out across their entire community.
