Sony is looking to adapt another fan-favorite manga series for the big screen. According to Deadline, Kevin McMullin is adapting Akihito Tsukushi’s Made in Abyss at Columbia Pictures.
First published in 2012, Made in Abyss is serialized online by Taskeshobo’s digital publication Web Comic Gamma. The series follows the orphan Riko in search of her mother alongside her robot friend Reg. Together they journey into a deep hole in the Earth called the Abyss. On their journey, they encounter a number of mysteries and hidden horrors. It has been praised for its unique story and brutal themes going on to spawn an anime spin-off, sequel film, and an action role-playing game.

McMullin is set to adapt the manga for Sony with Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment producing along with Bullet Train and Heroes actor Masi Oka. Lee and Oka have teamed on other projects, including Deathnote 1 and 2, and Promised Neverland.
McMullin’s first feature, Low Tide, was released theatrically by A24 in 2019. He is also known for his work on the short First Prize.
