PARK RIDGE — Firefighters battled to contain a two-alarm fire Saturday at the former Sony campus building that left four firefighters injured and blotted the crisp blue sky with grey smoke clouds.
Park Ridge firefighters responded to the blaze at 1 Sony Drive just around 2 p.m. and stayed on the scene for nearly four hours, according to fire department chief Tom Lepore.
Thick gray smoke filled the area as flames erupted from the building's top floors.
"We wrapped up pretty quickly because we used the master streams since there was a large amount of fire visible on arrival," Lepore said.
Six departments from the surrounding area responded to assist. Four firefighters were treated by emergency medical services on-site for minor injuries.
Firefighters drilled a hole into the fourth floor of the building to locate the fire. The fire started accidentally as contractors worked to demolish the building, Lepore said.
The fire was contained after nearly an hour on the scene, Lepore added.
"There was nothing suspicious about the fire. It happened accidentally due to demolition," Lepore said.
