Finally, at last, it appears Sony will be unveiling the feature its MLB The Show series has been missing since its inception. In 2014, I spoke with Sony San Diego Studio's Ramone Russell, and he told me create-a-ballpark was coming, but not that year.
It's been seven years, but it is better late than never.
Thanks to a leak in the YouTube description of a recently released hype video for the upcoming MLB The Show 21 title, virtual baseball fans will have access to a "new Stadium Creator" that will allow users to "build the next great ballpark."
Sony has since deleted the description in the video, but here is a screenshot with the reference.
If you've been reading my articles over the past 4-5 years, you know I've been pounding this drum since 2014.
Now that Sony is launching The Show on the PS5, PS4, and Xbox One, and Xbox One X/S, SSDS has also deemed this to be the right time to open up the Stadium Creator feature.
It's difficult to quantify how big of an addition this could be to the game, but I must mention my optimism and even excitement comes with some caution. As you can see from the length of time it took to add this feature, this isn't a publisher that rushes into things and makes it a point to go big or go home.
MORE FOR YOU
Because of their measured approach to new features, I'm a little concerned it might not be as fleshed out as some fans are hoping and expecting.
Let’s hope we’re not saddled with restrictions that keep it from specific modes like Diamond Dynasty and franchise mode. If it's not available in the latter, Stadium Creator is almost a complete waste as franchise mode is where the new feature will be best appreciated.
If you're only able to build a new stadium for user-controlled teams, that's not a complete killer, as there should be some workarounds, but it would be much more enjoyable without that limitation. Hopefully, SSDS doesn't make the same mistake EA does with Madden's relocation and stadium customization tool.
EA forces users to wait through in-game processes before they can enjoy the customization. You can't start to build your stadium until Week 8, and you're not able to move into your new digs until the following season. Again, this isn't a feature-breaking restriction but it is one bit of realism fans of the concept could probably do without.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, let's hope this creation tool isn’t too simplistic and devoid of the kinds of options that allow stadium creators to feel as though they've engineered something unique.
Ideally, we'll have access to super-high or short fences, structures or statues in the outfield stands, varied light fixtures, a wide range of dimensions, nuances in the outfield like bullpens in fair territory, hills in center field, elevated dugouts, plexiglass protection in front of the first few rows, etc., and even customizable ads and images (within reason) for the ballpark.
Hopefully–considering we've been waiting nearly ten years for this thing–Sony will abandon the overly safe, breadcrumb approach and instead bust out the whole loaf.
MLB The Show releases on April 20.
