Sony is reportedly planning on discontinuing the production of certain models of the PlayStation 4. While there isn't a date known for when this might happen, sharp-eyed consumers spotted a sign at a Japanese retailer sharing the news.
As reported by VideoGamesChronicle, a well-known Twitter user and gamer who resides in Japan, Cheesemeister posted a picture showing a PS4 display offering a translation of the signs. The message started with, "dear customers: due to the manufacturer ending production, the following products will not be restocked." It then listed the PS4 500GB Glacier White, the PS4 1TB Jet Black, the PS4 1TB Glacier White, the PS4 2TB Jet Black, and the PS4 Pro 1TB Glacier White. There hasn't been any confirmation from Sony as to whether or not the notice is accurate.

Despite the company offering no comment, this isn't the first clue that Sony might be planning to ramp down production of its last-gen console. In December, the official PlayStation Direct store briefly stated that it would no longer offer any PlayStation 4 Pro consoles for sale. The message was followed by some speculation in the gaming community that the company would discontinue the model altogether.
Shortly after the media began reporting on the note, Sony took it down but did not issue an official statement on why the notice was there. The PlayStation 5 has had a solid launch, breaking all-time sales records and becoming the best-selling game console. According to VideoGamesChronicle, combined with the sales numbers in the early days of the PS5 and Sony's stated goal of getting players to adopt the new console "at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before," the site makes the case that the PS4 getting discontinued makes sense.
However, Sony is still servicing PlayStation 4 users. The company has taken steps to ensure that users who own a PS5 are downloading the right kind of game, as many titles are still being released for both the Playstation 4 and the PlayStation 5. The company went on the record shortly after its new console launched, with plans to offer games and support for several years into the future.
However, as VGC pointed out, the PlayStation 4 Pro still carries a $399 asking price with most retailers. That's the same price point as the digital version of the PS5. With no immediate comment from the company, Sony fans will have to wait and see what the plans are for the PlayStation 4 in its many iterations.
