Has Sony retired the Killzone franchise? - App Trigger

With the official Killzone website being taken offline, does this mark the end of the first-person-shooter series for PlayStation?

The Killzone franchise has been a mixed bag. But it has also been a staple on the PlayStation since the first game released on PlayStation 2 in 2004.

Over the years, the series has simply existed within the overcrowded first-person shooter space. While the games have always been impressive visually, their gameplay and storytelling often left a lot to be desired.

The most recent installment in the series was Killzone: Shadow Fall, which was a launch title for the PlayStation 4 in November 2013. Again, it received a mixed reception. It sold over 2.1 million copies and was one of the best-selling PS4 games (No. 22), which makes Sony’s latest move a bit surprising.

Over the weekend, Sony retired Killzone.com, the official website for the video game franchise. While this will have little impact on the multiplayer modes, player stats or ranking data for Killzone Mercenary or Killzone Shadow Fall, it does seem to suggest that Sony is pulling the plug on the franchise — at least for the time being.

Developer Guerrilla Games didn’t offer any sort of explanation, only thanking the fans “for their enthusiasm and support” throughout the years. The move is also somewhat baffling as there seems to be no logical reason for disbanding the website. If Sony were to cut multiplayer support that’d be one thing; but, multiplayer for the two latest games is still being supported, although it’s now long longer possible to create or manage clans in Killzone Shadow Fall.

Furthermore, what does this mean for the future of the franchise? Does this mean Killzone is officially retired as a franchise? And if so, why? Couldn’t they just have left the website up and running and just not announce anything?

Perhaps Sony would rather Guerilla Games focus entirely on its new franchise, Horizon. Horizon Zero Dawn released in 2017 and the action-RPG from Guerilla Games was met with critical acclaim. The game was a recipient of numerous awards and was incredibly successful in terms of sales. It was no surprise that a sequel, Horizon Forbidden West was announced, and set to be released this year.

While it would technically be possible for Sony to get a new developer to continue the Killzone franchise, perhaps the company just doesn’t see the potential in it anymore. Maybe down the line we’ll get a new Killzone game but right now I don’t think the PlayStation community is hungry for it.
