Sony CEO Says Continuing PS4 Support Is ‘The Right Thing To Do’ - Screen Rant

The CEO of Sony, Jim Ryan, has come out with a statement saying that continuing on with PlayStation 4 support is the "right thing to do." Months ago, Ryan himself said that he was all for the changing of generations and that he was completely on board with PS5 exclusive games. However, as of late, it seems popular games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon: Forbidden West, and maybe God of War: Ragnorak will be cross-gen titles.

The PlayStation 5 has been around for a couple of weeks now, having launched on November 12 to some of the busiest and quickest sales ever. Ever since then, there’s been a high scarcity among the popular console, which could be one reason as to why Sony is seemingly reversing its stance on exclusives.

Recently, in an interview with Edge magazine, reported by WCCFTech, Ryan stated that the continuing support for the PS4 was the "right" and "rational" thing to do, considering many users will still be playing on the older console - a bit of a difference to what he said back in May of 2020. Ryan stated then that because the games were made for the next-generation, they should be only exclusive to that generation.

In his full statement to Edge, Ryan continued to talk about how Sony will continue to make games for the PS4 “as long as the need is there,” but as time passes, there will be more light shone on the PS5 and the development of that console. That’s the rational thing to think of, considering within the next year, it will most likely be much easier to get a PS5, but it’s still a shock to see Sony switch its stance so quickly, considering Ryan was completely on board with PS5 exclusives not that long ago.

This isn’t to say that there won’t be completely PS5 exclusive games. Demon’s Souls - the remake of the popular game that started the Dark Souls series - is going to be completely exclusive to the PS5, along with the long-awaited Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and many more. But it still feels strange to hear Ryan say the complete opposite of what he said a couple of months ago. Many players are probably wondering if he only says this because getting a PS5 has been so incredibly difficult, but there’s nothing they can do about it. All that would be better is if Ryan told the PlayStation community which games would be cross-gen or not. Perhaps once Sony has ironed out some of the major problems with the PS5 at launch, it will be more willing to focus solely on the new console.
