Marvel and Sony May Have Extended Their Spider-Man Deal | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have reportedly extended the deal that allows the former to use the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to The DisInsider Show, the deal was allegedly extended as a result of Spider-Man's increasingly important role in the MCU's future.

The initial deal between Marvel and Sony fell apart in August 2019 after Disney reportedly asked for all future Spider-Man projects to be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the two studios. A new deal was then reached in September in which Marvel and Sony would co-produce the yet-to-be-titled Spider-Man 3 while leaving the door open for Tom Holland's Peter Parker to appear in one other future MCU film.

"I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said at the time. "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."

Meanwhile, Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be a massive movie of multiversal proportions. Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Stephen Strange, Jamie Foxx will reprise his role as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Alfred Molina from Spider-Man 2 will return as Doctor Octopus and Andrew Garfield and Kirsten Dunst, who played Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in both of the aforementioned Spider-Man franchises, are also expected to feature. Additionally, the likes of Charlie Cox's Daredevil, Thomas Haden Church's Sandman, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and even Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker have all been rumored to appear.

Directed by Jon Watts, the currently untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 17, 2021.
