If you are a 90s kid, then you have been witness to how the entire television industry transformed from an ‘Idiot box’ to Smart box in the past few years. If you can go into a flashback like 5-7 years back, buyers only considered price and picture quality as the most crucial factor while buying a new TV. However, things have changed and so are our televisions. With the advent of technology, TVs are getting smarter day-by-day and cheaper too as one can today easily purchase a Smart TV in almost every price segment. However, there’s still a big thick line between the regular budget and premium TVs.
Not so long ago, Sony launched its new X90H Smart TV with 4K resolution and 120fps refresh rate in India. The X90H TV comes in two screen sizes -- 55-inch KD-55X9000H and 65-inch KD-65X9000H, priced at Rs 1,29,900 and Rs 2,09,900 respectively. We have been using the 55-inch version of the TV for a while now and let’s find out whether it’s worth buying or not in our full review.
Sony Bravia X90H TV review: Design
Sony has always been a step ahead when it comes to the design of their premium televisions and Sony Bravia X90H is no different. Sony has used premium quality materials with back made from high-quality plastic and bezels, which by the way, are extremely thin and almost negligible are made from aluminium.
We mounted the X90H on a tabletop using the metal blade stand that came with the box during our review period. We have to admit that assembling this TV was a piece of cake. The metal blade stand is a magnetic stand which gets attached to the TV with zero effort and hassle. The TV can also be mounted on the wall using the wall bracket. The front appeal of the TV is good and it has zero distraction, thanks to the slim bezels.
Moving to the other design elements of the TV, the X90H is not the slimmest TV in Sony’s portfolio. The TV has a slight thickness to it with a plain back a clean look with cutouts for ports and power cord. Talking about the ports, the X90H comes with eARC, HDMI, USB ports, Digital output port and more.
Overall, we don’t have any complaints about the TV in the design department.
Sony Bravia X90H: Display
As far as display is concerned, the Bravia X90H excels in that department as it comes with a 4K UHD Triluminous display. This is an LCD type panel with Direct Full Array LED that paired with Local Dimming technology to offer better contrast and details. Other than this, the panel is equipped with Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG that further helps enhance the picture quality of the TV.
Sony has equipped the TV with its image processing chip, the 4K HDR processor X1, that claims to offer real-time image processing for better contrast ratio and wider colour gamut range. The TV is also equipped with 4K X-Reality PRO and X Motion Clarity features to reduce tearing and enhance overall clarity in each scene. Other features include X-tended Dynamic range, Precision Colour Mapping, Object-based HDR remaster and more.
The TV also comes with several preset picture modes -- Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Game, Graphics, Photo, Custom, Dolby Vision Bright, Dolby Vision Dark and Netflix calibrated. The Netflix Calibrated mode works as described and delivers really good viewing experience.
We tested the TV with a couple of 4K movies via local storage and other OTT platforms. During our test, we realised that the TV produces some really good looking visuals with deep blacks, high contrast and vivid colours. The panel has good dynamic range and contrast levels. Sharpness level was also decent.
Another essential feature of the TV is that it comes with 120fps refresh rate support and Sony says that it is compatible with upcoming PlayStation 5 and will offer high refresh rate gaming. To test it out, we plugged in our gaming laptop powered by Intel Core i9 processor and Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics and the laptop detected the TV has a 60Hz panel. We also switched to Game preset picture mode and nothing changed. We assume that this particular feature is limited only for consoles, which is a huge downside.
Sony Bravia X90H: Audio performance
The audio performance of the TV is handled by two full-range bass-reflex speakers and two tweeters that feature X-Balanced design. Also, the TV comes equipped with Dolby ATMOS and DTS Digital Surround processing technology. In our view, the TV sounds decent. It has an ample amount of bass and loudness. Voices from movie scenes are clear and crisp too.
Sony Bravia X90H: Software performance
Sony Bravia X90H runs Android TV 9.0 operating system out-of-the-box. Sony has further added a few fancy menu interface for changing various settings such as sound modes, picture mode and others. The TV also comes with some pre-installed apps such as video player, etc. Performance through menus and settings are smooth and we noticed no lag at all. The TV also works with Apple AirPlay and Apple HomeKit.
The TV comes with a big remote, which is a smart remote with a dedicated Netflix and Google Play hotkeys. Apart from that, the remote can control other devices as well, which are connected via HDMI.
Sony Bravia X90H: Verdict
At the price of Rs 1,29,900, the Sony Bravia X90H is a good TV for most users. From design to display and audio, the X90H checks almost every box. So, if you are looking to buy a premium 4K HDR10 enabled TV that comes with Dolby ATMOS technology, offers dedicated Netflix mode and delivers an overall smooth users experience, then Bravia X90H is worth a look.
