Yesterday, we got a deep dive into a huge update coming to Ghosts of Tsushima, one of 2020’s breakout hits on PS4, arriving on October 16. It includes New Game+, loadouts and an entirely new co-op multiplayer mode.
What was not mentioned at all in the entire update? PlayStation 5, despite the fact that the new console is coming out less than a month after this update.
It strikes me as weird that we have heard pretty much nothing about any potential next-gen updates for two of PS4’s massive hits this year, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, both game of the year contenders, both huge sellers for Sony.
The only last-gen game that has really been a focus for Sony has been Insomniac’s Spider-Man, a pretty extensive remaster that fans were upset was not a free upgrade, but is instead rolled into a paid bundle with Miles Morales. Insomniac has justified the cost by explaining how extensive the remaster is, but there has been almost nothing said about PS5 versions of Tsushima or TLOU2.
The only thing I can even find about TLOU2 is Jim Ryan saying that the game “will run on the PS5 without issue.” Uh, okay, good to know I guess.
The base assumption is that last-gen games running on PS5 will have stock upgrades like better framerates and faster load times, even if there are not outright remasters for the games coming. But…
A) Why is Sony not talking about upgrades or future remasters for two of its biggest hits of the year?
B) Why are we not at least seeing hands-on footage of what Tsushima or The Last of Us Part 2 look or play like running on PS5?
Early review units have started to go out to a select few Japanese sites and creators, but the restrictions have been almost comical, so far just stock shots of the consoles that rumor has it, Sony doesn’t even want these people to touch in these initial photos. We’ve seen nothing of the UI, much less games like The Last of Us Part 2 or Ghost of Tsushima running on them.
Perhaps these are just future embargoes that are about to expire in the next few weeks, but we are literally just over a month away from the public launch of this console, and it’s a little weird that Sony is not talking about games like these or showing them off. Microsoft, meanwhile, has unlocked something like 200 test games for Xbox Series X, sent units to everyone on earth and seems to have relatively few restrictions for showcasing the console or these titles.
I don’t agree with the conspiracy theories that Sony is “hiding something” with these restrictions, and yet I feel like they are being overprotective of a console that will literally be in players’ hands in a month, and I don’t see the reason for these elaborate, limiting preview rules. And I do find it odd that the launch of the PS5 is not incorporating any information about the two biggest PS4 hits of this past year. At all.
More to come, hopefully.
