Sony Might Acquire Batman: Arkham, Mortal Kombat Publisher WB Games - Screen Rant

Mortal Kombat and Batman: Arkham publisher Warner Bros. Interactive might still be up for sale, and PlayStation owners Sony might be the one to finally acquire it. WB Interactive parent company AT&T has previously indicated that its video game division is actually not for sale in the wake of the tech mogul’s highly publicized buyout of Warner Bros. a couple of years ago, but that hasn’t stopped people from speculating as to where the publisher might land should AT&T's claim merely be a ploy to calm investors.

These whisperings began with the alleged leak of WB Interactive being put up for sale back in July, with word that the publisher (along with its various in-house subsidiaries like Rocksteady, NetherRealm Studios, and the LEGO franchise’s Traveler’s Tales) might find a home with the likes of Microsoft or EA. There were even hints that the former would announce this blockbuster purchase at its Xbox Games Showcase later that month, but none of this came to pass. Now, even as the official word is that WB Interactive is staying right where it is for the foreseeable future, some still believe that console market domineer Sony might just be the one to seal the deal and add it to its already impressive arsenal of studios and franchises.

Analyst Michael Pachter told Gaming Bolt that the Metal Gear franchise without mastermind Hideo Kojima at the helm “might not be worth very much” and that the upcoming Final Fantasy 16 might suffer due to a lack of interest in the West since 2016’s Final Fantasy XV. However, Pachter's biggest bombshell was presumably informed speculation that Sony might take an interest in purchasing Warner Bros. Interactive should it still be for sale, explaining:

I do think Sony is in a good position to buy Warner Bros. Interactive assets should they ever go on sale again. Depending on whether AT&T chooses to sell them, and how. If they just want to license their IP out, they will probably not go with exclusivity deals, because they won’t want the games limited to just one platform, but if they sell perpetual rights to Batman or Mortal Kombat, I think those assets would be pretty cool for Sony to fold into their lineup.

Patcher also pointed out that Sony is no stranger to superhero games like the Batman: Arkham series, as its own Insomniac Games recently developed 2018’s critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man and its upcoming spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Pachter's and others' implicit reasoning lies in the fact that Xbox Game Studios recently made off with Bethesda's parent company Zenimax in a landmark purchase, adding major franchises like Fallout and Elder Scrolls to its library of gaming properties and leaving PlayStation in desperate need of a equal and speedy counter.

If Pachter and other are correct, then WB Interactive would be an ideal grab for Sony. The publisher has an impressive list of high-selling game franchises under its belt and adding Batman, Mortal Kombat, and Hitman to the likes of God Of War, Ratchet And Clank, and Infamous would mark a formidable coup within the industry. Of course, all of this should be taken as speculation at this point, and players should stay tuned for any further developments in the future of WB Interactive - whatever those may be.
