Sony Just Showed How We’re Going To Get Our Black PS5 - Forbes

Speculation about those wild plates on the outside of the PS5 began more or less immediately after Sony revealed its bold design for its new console, but yesterday’s teardown video more or less confirmed something we had suspected for a long time. Not only are those plates removeable, they look to be quick, simple and easy to remove without tools. That opens the door to selling all sorts of custom panels that users could swap in and out when they want a change of pace.

For one thing, this is how we’ll get a black PS5, something people have speculated about since we first saw that white Dualsense. It’s easy to imagine a range of different colors that you could swap to better match your decor, or even patterns. But I’m also interested by game-specific custom panels, which would be a little like limited edition consoles, but much more accessible.

Limited edition consoles have been around for a little while, but they became a much bigger part of the conversation in the latter half of this generation, with all three manufacturers making unique variants for their biggest games and some of those consoles—the Animal Crossing: New Horizons edition of the Nintendo Switch comes to mind—becoming hot commodities in and of themselves. It’s a testament to the pull of these things that I considered buying an ACNH Switch when they recently came back into stock, despite the fact that I have literally zero need for one.

But if we’re being real, very few consumers are going to buy a brand-new console just so they can rep God of War, no matter how much they might like God of War. A full-on limited edition console is a product for someone that either didn’t have a console before they bought it, or for someone with so much money that they cease to be a particularly salient part of the PlayStation userbase. They’re fun little marketing tools, but not mass market products.

Custom panels could be a whole lot cheaper, however, to the point where they would be a solid pack-in for a collector’s edition or a more manageable standalone purchase, accessing the hype associated with a limited edition console for something a normal person might conceivably buy. So while I’m likely never going to bite the bullet and buy that limited edition God of War console, I could maybe see myself slapping on a custom panel to give my machine a little bit of flavor while I play the game.

My guess is that we’re going to see a robust offering of first-party panels, but at the very least third-party manufacturers are going to jump on this as soon as they can. The PS5, right from the beginning, is not a machine designed to blend into anywhere. Swapping these panels could either help it to match its surroundings or stand out even more.
