Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Credit: InsomniacWe’ve had Xbox Series X in the hands of press and influencers for weeks, but now Sony is starting to send hardware out as well. Yesterday was a sort of PS5 unboxing day for press and influencers beginning a review program, and gaming Twitter for a time filled up with people removing the delicate white tissue paper from their cardboard boxes and removing the next-gen hardware inside. It seems that the various embargos involved means that all people were able to post was the box, but man did they post that box.
It should be noted that I don’t have one, so I’m going off of Twitter as much as any of the rest of you. As we can see from Keighley’s Tweet, there’s a fair amount of hardware in the box: the console, an extra controller, camera, charging station and headest. That last one will be particularly important, as it will be the best way to evaluate the system’s much-vaunted 3D audio during the review period, because it won’t be available on speakers for a little bit. I’m also assuming that they got a bunch of codes and such for games: last generation it was mostly discs, I’m guessing that time is long gone.
Elsewhere, we can see that PS5 games are starting to show up on PSN servers, which would make sense if Sony is starting to distribute games like Demon’s Souls to reviewers. As with the Xbox Series X, it’s a little bit of a strange launch with a serious paucity of launch games that show off the new hardware. Last generation’s titles were pretty bad, of course: Ryse: Son of Rome, Knack, and even Killzone: Shadow Fall left a lot to be desired, though the last one was probably the most complete game. This is going to be a little different on all fronts, but I suppose 2020 has prepared us to be adaptable.
Regardless, it’s exciting to see these things out in the wild. I’ll be interested to see what this thing looks like in a genuine entertainment center, near actual, normal-sized electronics. They’ll be huge, of course, but at least it’s looking like we’ll be able to buy some custom faceplates to make it a little less ostentatious if we want. Or more ostentatious!
