Metal Gear Solid 5
Credit: KonamiLet’s take this with a grain of salt, as we do with all these rumors, but this one hits that old sweet spot between being believable on a conceptual level and being, in a simple way, fun. A recent rumor coming from Youtube channel RedGamingTech, via GamesRadar, claims that the original Metal Gear Solid is getting a PS5-exclusive remake, and that Metal Gear Solids (Metal Gears Solid?) 2,3, and 4 will also be getting HD remakes.
There’s a reason this is believable: the gaming industry is pretty gung ho about this sort of thing these days. Sony exclusives include Shadow of the Colossus, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Final Fantasy VII and the upcoming Demon’s Souls remake, and Resident Evil 2 made big waves coming from Capcom. Metal Gear Solid would be a perfect candidate: it’s old, it’s revered, and the original gameplay doesn’t really hold up to modern standards. Konami, for its part, doesn’t seem to know what to do with the franchise in the absence of its legendary creator Hideo Kojiima. Cue a remake.
The second part of this rumor—PS5 exclusivity—is harder to comment on, but it certainly doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. PlayStation might not be spending Microsoft money to shore up its exclusives, but it’s also working to make sure it still has the prestige library that earned it success in the Ps4 generation. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear this news.
The main concern here would be that Hideo Kojiima will necessarily not be involved, which could lead to both an abundance of caution from longtime fans and opens the door to all sorts of problems. This game, like Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil 2, will need a more extensive remake that goes into gameplay systems and revives them for a modern audience: it’s a big job, and it’s one that will have to happen without the guy that led the team that did it in the first place.
Still, with enough competence, this thing will definitely sell like gang busters. Even without competence, it will likely sell pretty well. Just a rumor for right now, but a fun one.
