The successors to the Sony WH-1000XM3 noise-cancelling headphones will launch this week

The Sony WH-100XM3 headphones won a string of awards after they launched in 2018, not least for their awesome active noise cancelling. Sony has all but confirmed the successors will arrive at the end of this week.
A teaser page on Sony’s Japanese website tells visitors to “wait 4 something exciting”, along with a date stamp for this Friday (August 7), the strongest hint possible that the long wait for the WH-1000XM4 cans is almost over.

What to expect from Sony’s next-generation headphones? Leaks suggest the company is addressing one of the biggest bugbears with the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones - their inability to pair with more than one device. In fact, it seems the Sony WH-1000XM4 cans will be able to connect to two devices simultaneously, meaning you don’t need to keep fiddling with Bluetooth settings to switch between sources.
Another shortcoming of the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones was the poor voice quality when using the headset to place calls, with the person on the other end often complaining that they could barely hear you. The alleged new Precise Voice Pickup facility will use the five built-in mics to detect your voice and hopefully avoid the need to resort to the phone’s mic to make yourself heard.
Design-wise, leaked photos suggest the headset will look very similar to the elegant and lightweight Sony WH-1000XM3. The price is likely to be similar too, with the two previous versions of the headphones starting at $349.
Of course, there’s nothing much wrong with the Sony WH-1000XM3 cans and the release of a new model means it might be time to pick up a pair of those at a discounted price before supplies run dry. They are currently priced at $235.99 on Amazon if the likely cost of the WH-1000XM4 is too punchy.
