It has to happen at some point! This has been dragging out for months and months, but time marches inexorably forward even as we’re trapped in a looping, Groundhog Day start of existence of perpetual semi-lockdown. But eventually, Sony and Microsoft MSFT are going to have to tell us how much the Xbox Series X and PS5 cost. It just has to happen, and it’s likely going to happen this month.
That’s what we’ve been assuming for a little while now, but now a report from Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki cites an unnamed Sony official saying that the company’s next major PS5-related announcement is tentatively scheduled for this month. With the form factor and several games already revealed, it’s hard to imagine that Sony could get a way with a major PS5 event this late into the game that didn’t announce price and release date.
Elsewhere, it’s also been rumored that Sony might have a software trick or two still up its sleeve that we might see at a future PS5 event as well. While price and release date are to be expected and, I suspect, not going to be huge surprises, there is still a chance for Sony to give us a little bit more from its storied first party studios to juice the launch.
So, we’ll see: there are 24 days left in August, and in my estimation every one of those that goes by raises the possibility that we’ll see an announcement—or an announcement of an announcement—on the next day. As I’ve said, it’s got to happen at some point. If Sony actually wants to sell the PS5, and I suspect it does, it will at some point need to tell us how much it costs.
The one real question mark is how Sony will handle the Disc Drive/Digital Only split. Most are assuming something like a $50 divide, but the question is whether that puts the cheaper console at $449 or $499. If Sony is able to say that it is at least selling one console below $499, that will be a feather in its cap even if people wind up buying the other console.
