Ghost
ArekkzGhost of Tsushima just keeps impressing as one of the biggest breakout hits of the year. NPD numbers are in, and it’s the best selling game of July in the US, beating out even Call of Duty across three platforms, when it’s only on one.
But past that, NPD notes that Ghost of Tsushima is actually the 4th biggest launch in Sony publishing history for its first month, pretty stunning for a totally new IP, or one not tied to an existing famous character like Spider-Man. I’m not sure what the other three are, but my guess is something in the God of War, Last of Us and Spider-Man family.
Ghost of Tsushima has done extremely well outside the US, in particular Japan where the game is set, and it’s about to become the biggest PS4 releases for the console generation over there, as it is bound to sail past Spider-Man despite only being out for a little while.
NPD also notes that Ghost of Tsushima is the fifth best-selling game of the year already, and that’s five months of sales data still to go, as well as whatever “enhancements” we might see with PS5, as it could be a powerful draw for the new system given its visuals. Improvements to framerate and load times are really all that game needs, and PS5 can obviously offer both, even if Tsushima does not release a fully new remastered version of the game for the new console.

Ghost of Tsushima
SonyIt’s also Sucker Punch’s biggest launch ever, which should be obvious, given that the last highest for them was Infamous: Second Son. But I think Tsushima has instantly elevated them in Sony’s dev roster, pretty much exactly how Horizon Zero Dawn raised Guerilla’s profile. But Tsushima is an even bigger hit than that game, and this turning into a franchise seems inevitable now, even if a new PS5 sequel is going to be years away.
As I’ve remarked previously, Ghost of Tsushima is only the 17th highest PS4 game rated on Metacritic by critics, but fans have scored it as the best game of the generation. While that may be a bit of an extreme categorization, it does show that fans liked it enough to “love bomb” it with a 9.3/10 with 15,000 reviews in. I’ve never seen anything like that in the history of Metacritic (usually bombing is to drop scores, not raise them), so clearly it has a passionate fanbase already.
We’ll see how Ghost of Tsushima continues to do the rest of the year, but it’s a must-own on PS4 and probably will be on PS5 too, so I’d expect it to end as one of the year’s top releases, despite only being on a single platform.
