Sony Teases a7S III Launch Event - DivePhotoGuide.com

After a five-year wait since the release of the a7S II, Sony video fans only have to endure another week until they get to meet the successor. The “Imagination in Motion” launch event for the videocentric a7S III, teased on Sony’s alphauniverse.com website, is 10am EDT on July 28th.

Built around a full-frame 12.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, the a7S Mark II is capable of recording UHD 4K at 30fps internally as well as 1080p at up to 120fps. The expectation is that the Mark III will be able to record 4K/60p footage using the full sensor width, and a leak to EOSHD back in December—apparently concerning a 15-megapixel Quad Bayer sensor destined for the a7S III—seems to confirm the higher frame rate as well as an HDR mode in 4K. It’s likely that video will be recorded at 10bit in-camera, as opposed to the 8-bit recording possible with the Mark II.

Once the kings of full-frame video, Sony seems to be playing catch-up with the likes of Canon (with the new EOS R5), Panasonic (with S1H) and even Fujifilm (with the X-T4). Let’s hope there are surprises in store. Stay tuned to DPG to find out.
