With the bombshell news that Sony has recently acquired a stake in Epic Games, conspiracy theorists have been working in overdrive. While the investment will allow both companies to collaborate more closely in both video games and other mediums, some suspicious members of the gaming community are trying to draw a different conclusion. Namely, that the deal was the price to pay for Epic Games’ generous praise of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and its tech. Not so, says Epic’s Tim Sweeney.
Put your money where your mouth is
One of the highlights of the PS5 hardware is its fast SSD storage. While the raw power of the components in the console may differ from that of the competition, its SSD tech will set it apart from the competition tremendously. Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney certainly thought so. During the Unreal Engine 5 demo back in May, he had expressed his belief that the SSD tech was groundbreaking. There were, according to Sweeney, no conventional hard drives at the moment that could compete with it.
That praise has led to some questioning if the love for the PS5 was to entice Sony’s investment. That idea, however, has now been shot down by the man himself. Sweeney shared that talks with Sony regarding investments were only started after the Unreal Engine 5 demo, rather than before as reported by USgamer.

The aboveboard nature of collaboration between the two companies has been revealed previously. Sweeney alluded as much back in May. Considering the power and tech behind Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, it is not a surprise for Sony to be impressed and decide to get in on the action.
The amount of investment, at $250 million USD, is also not that big when compared to Epic’s value. We all know just how much of a gold mine Fortnite is. The prevalent use of Unreal Engine also ensures that Epic Games has plenty of profit either way. All these points towards a normal business venture between the companies, rather than one of nefarious intent.
