PS5 Release Doesn’t Mean The End Of PS4 Support, Sony Says - Screen Rant

The PlayStation 5 is set to launch by the end of this year, but Sony says it will continue to support the PS4. Even with the PS5 releasing this holiday season, it will be at least 2021 before some of the big games already revealed for it are on store shelves.

One way that Sony is already planning to keep the PS4 alive is through cross-generation game releases. Sony says it will support developers that want to offer free PS5 versions of cross-gen games for players who buy the PS4 version, similar to what Microsoft is doing with its Smart Delivery program. Microsoft is actually taking its cross-generation support even further than Sony by holding off on releasing first-party Xbox Series X exclusive games for the first couple years of the console’s life.

Though it isn’t making any similar promises, Sony says that the PS4 won’t be forgotten once the PS5 launches. PlayStation Worldwide head of marketing Eric Lempel appeared on the recent livestreamed reveal of the PS5’s DualSense controller to talk about some of Sony’s plans for the next generation. As Gamasutra reports, he also touched on the future of its current-generation console and made it clear that it’s not going anywhere. Lempel pointed to the big releases of the summer so far as being among the best games ever for the PS4 and assured fans that “there’s a lot more to come on PlayStation 4.”

PS5 vs PS4

That doesn’t mean that PS4 owners will have access to everything that PS5 early adopters do, though. Due to the upgraded hardware inside the PS5, it’s capable of pulling off some technical feats that the PS4 just can’t match, and rather than trying to develop scaled-down current-gen versions of their games, some developers are fully making the leap to the next generation. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is taking advantage of the PS5’s new SSD to power its impressive dimension-hopping gameplay, closing off the possibility of a PS4 release. Similarly, Resident Evil Village will be next-gen exclusive, reportedly because the load times and texture pop-in would be too severe on the PS4 or Xbox One.

It’s never fun to be left behind when a new console generation launches, but this time at least there are some assurances from both Microsoft and Sony that they won’t be abandoning their current-gen consoles entirely. It’s not clear exactly what’s coming to the PlayStation 4 down the line, but it sounds like it could be enough to at least make the wait a little easier for players who aren’t picking up a PS5 at launch.
