When Will It Be Safe to Buy Ethereum?

Cryptocurrency prices have been all over the map, as volatility really shakes this group. First it was just Bitcoin (CCC:BTC-USD) that was showing signs of weakness. Then Ethereum (CCC:ETH-USD), Bitcoin Cash (CCC:BCH-USD) and others began to waver. It’s actually been pretty interesting to watch this group. Source: Shutterstock InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips In February, most high-growth tech stocks peaked, leading to a fast, painful bear market in this group. Low-quality SPACs with no revenue and other speculative bets declined 70% to 80%. High-quality, high-growth companies tumbled 40%-plus. It was a really big pullback, yet cryptocurrencies seemed to do just fine. Bitcoin peaked in April on the same day as Coinbase’s (NASDAQ:COIN) debut. That top for Bitcoin was a red flag for cryptos. However, Bitcoin didn’t immediately roll over. Instead, it pulled back from its high, then drifted somewhat aimlessly until May. At that point, Ethereum, Dogecoin (CCC:DOGE-USD) and others ripped higher. Now the whole group is volatile. So what do the charts say about Ethereum? Trading Ethereum After the Dip Click to EnlargeSource: Chart courtesy of TrendSpider In early April, Ethereum broke out over its resistance, clearing $2,000 in the process. In a very bullish development, the cryptocurrency’s prior resistance then became its support. That helped pave the way for its surge above $4,000. However, those prices couldn’t be sustained, and Ethereum came crashing back to earth. From its peak to its recent trough, it fell 60.5%. That decline took just a few days to pan out, highlighting how volatile this space can be, both on the way up and on the way down. 7 Cheap Stocks With Dividends for Both Returns and Cash Flow Despite Ethereum’s lofty recent losses, there are some silver linings for it. First, the area near $2,000 that the currency had reached during its previous breakout held as support after the violent pullback. Second, the 21-week moving average held as support, too. Consequently, we have some reference points to watch when the currency drops. However, Ethereum has had its challenges, too. Its 50-day moving average continues to act as resistance, and there are questions as to whether Ethereum can reclaim the $3,000 to $3,250 area without at least one more decline first. If the currency clears $3,000, keep an eye on $3,250, which is roughly the 21-day moving average. If Ethereum climbs above that point, the $3,500-plus level will be in play. On the downside, I wouldn’t hate a retest of the $2,000 area, which is roughly the 21-week moving average. If that point fails to hold, we may see a test of the 200-day moving average and a retest of the prior all-time high near $1,425. Such a decline would be likely to create a reasonably good buying opportunity for crypto investors. Is Ethereum Safe to Buy? Investors need to understand something when it comes to cryptocurrencies: This group is incredibly volatile! I’m not necessarily a diehard bull when it comes to the group, either. They have meaningful applications and a limited, controlled amount of supply. Consequently, cryptocurrencies are somewhat attractive. With Ethereum specifically, the currency has attractive and useful qualities. That’s one reason why so many people believe that paying for things with it is convenient and why NFTs are always purchased with it. That said, this group is so volatile that it’s hard to imagine it ever becoming widely used around the world. Not to mention the regulatory headaches that come along with it or the fact that virtually every government in the world would fight it. Simply put, I don’t think Bitcoin, Ethereum or any other cryptocurrency will replace the U.S. dollar. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t make money with this group or that I think it will disappear. We must keep in mind that Ethereum more than doubled, climbing 128.4%, in just 42 days. From the high, it took just 11 days for it to fall more than 60%. That’s not the kind of stability that a reserve currency needs. So is Ethereum safe to buy? I don’t think cryptocurrencies are going away, but intense volatility will keep many investors from calling Ethereum “safe.” There are a handful of cryptos that likely have staying power. Bitcoin is the obvious one, but Ethereum should be fine, too. As a result, I am okay with buying these names on weakness, using a part of investment portfolios devoted to speculative assets. I would love an opportunity to buy Ethereum between $1,400 and $2,000, although that opportunity may have passed. Forget AirPods 3: Sony WF-1000XM4 leaks in official looking video - Tom's Guide

sony.indah.link

We've been feasting on a treasure trove of Sony WF-1000XM4 leaks, promising longer battery life, IPX4 sweat proofing and support for high-resolution audio via Sony’s LDAC wireless tech.

Today, much of this information has been confirmed via an official looking promo video, with a few new details for good measure. Originally posted to YouTube, the clip is now mirrored on Reddit after it was inevitably pulled from the service.

The 2:33 video is exactly the kind of thing you’d expect to see at a launch event, complete with the WF-1000XM4 buds pulled apart in cross section, beautiful people modeling the earbuds in a variety of urban locations and captions highlighting the key features as they’re demonstrated (albeit in French).

Still, it’s not too hard to figure out what’s being highlighted, especially when some of the features come from yesterday’s Sony WF-1000XM4 leaks. IPX4-certified water resistance is flagged again, as are the key battery stats: up to 8 hours off a single charge with ANC (active noise cancellation) enabled, or 12 with it switched off. Combined with the charging case, this means you should get up to 36 hours of battery life, and the video also boasts that you can get an hour’s playback from just a 5-minute charge.

But the video mentions other things not highlighted by yesterday’s leak. New drivers will not only boost sound quality but include support for the LDAC Bluetooth codec and DSEE Extreme upscaling technology. As with Sony’s over-ear WH-1000XM4 headphones, the earbuds will include support for 360 Reality Audio which brings 3D effects to your music. Also demoed: a feature called Speak-to-Chat mode, which will automatically mute the audio when it notices you’re talking, so you can hear what’s said to you in response.

Eagle-eyed viewers of the video may also spot an unexpected cameo from a mystery Sony handset. Is this the Sony Xperia 1 III

The only things missing from the video were price and release date. For the former, yesterday’s leak suggested a MSRP of €279, which comes to around $340 – that’s substantially higher than the WF-1000XM3’s $230 price, even taking into account the fact that the European price point likely includes sales tax.

The release date remains a mystery, but if Sony has a polished promo video like this ready to go, you should expect the WF-1000XM4 to be available very soon indeed.

Sony to spend $18.39 billion on strategic investments over next 3 years, including subscription push - CNBC

Sony Group said on Wednesday it will spend 2 trillion yen ($18.39 billion) over the next three years on strategic investments, including a push to expand subscribers to its gaming and entertainment services.

Sony said in a statement it would accelerate investments in mobile and online services with the aim of expanding the number of consumers directly connected to its services to 1 billion people from 160 million.

As it streamlines its consumer electronic business, Sony is focusing more on movies, games and other content it sells through platforms such as its PlayStation games console.

The company is benefiting from strong demand for its PlayStation 5 launched in core markets in November. A global shortage of chips, however, means Sony is unable to keep up with demand for the games console, which it wants to use to encourage online game downloads and sign-ups for subscription services.

In the business year that started April 1, Sony aims to ship 14.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles.

Sony WF-1000XM4 promo video pops-up online - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

sony.indah.link

Sony's next flagship wireless buds have been on our radar for some time now. And thanks to a recent massive leak, we already had a pretty good idea what to expect. Now we get a clearer picture, still, thanks to an official promo video that recently leaked. It goes over all of the major features of the WF-1000XM4 buds.

The buds have a brand new custom V1 processor, as well as new drivers. Active noise cancelling should be better than ever, thanks to an internal and external dual feedback noise reduction module. Among other things, the video showcases a speak-to-chat feature, as well as automatic adaptive noise cancelling and pass-through profiles and location-based, user-customizable ones.

Some other highlights from the feature list include support for the High-res Bluetooth connection standard, also Hi-Res Audio, 360 Reality Audio and DSEE EXTREME sound optimization technology. The WF-1000XM4 have the same hands-free functions as their over-ear Sony WH-1000XM4 siblings, including dual host connection and bone conduction microphones with Precise Voice Pickup feature that significantly improves the in-call audio quality. The WF-1000XM4 are also IPX4 certified and should be perfectly ok with rain. Both Alexa and Google Assistant area supported.

Sony WF-1000XM4

Sony promises 8 hours of battery life on the buds themselves, and a total of 24 hours with the battery inside the charging case, which means it is good for two full recharges. Charging the case itself can be done via USB Type-C or wireless Qi. Charing should also be quote fast, with an advertised 60 minutes of battery life for just 5 minutes of charging.

Still no official word on pricing or availability, but we expect you will be able to get the WF-1000XM4 in black gold or platinum silver very soon for around EUR 280. Or right around EUR 30 more than their XM3 predecessors.

10 Takeaways From Sony Music Group’s 2020 Review and Future Forecast - Variety

sony.indah.link

While the pandemic sidelined untold numbers of physical businesses, Sony Music Group saw significant gains to its bottom line in 2020. That was the upshot of the company’s 2021 presentation to investors, held on May 27. The New York-based division of Tokyo’s electronics giant, led by chairman Rob Stringer (pictured), covers music in all territories except Japan, and it’s been thriving, albeit ever-so-slightly under the radar.

If anything, SMG has spent the last three years under Stringer growing its M&A and fortifying existing alliances, like that of The Orchard, which Sony acquired fully in March 2015 — in retrospect, for a song. More recent acquisitions include AWAL, which offers artist services to independent musicians; Beatstars, a marketplace for cleared-for-use beats and sounds; and Kobalt’s neighboring rights arm. In total, Sony spent $1.4 billion

As Stringer noted in his video, SMG hit an all-time high in revenue and a fourth consecutive year of record profit and margin, with revenues increasing by nearly $2 billion since 2016, outpacing the overall industry at a compound annual growth rate of 12% (8% adjusted for the impact of the consolidation of EMI’s Music Publishing, of which Sony acquisition was completed in 2018).

Artists who received presentation shout-outs by name included Travis Scott, Future and Giveon, signed to Epic; Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, The Kid Laroi and Powfu, signed to Columbia; and Doja Cat and Tate McRae, signed to RCA. They are but a few of the acts contributing to Sony’s Music 36% share of Spotify’s weekly worldwide chart (up from 28% from 2019).

Stringer has been with the company for 35 years and credits the “positive global brand that is Sony” for its long run as an entertainment powerhouse. “There’s not an artist in our system that doesn’t like Sony,” he told analysts.

Read on for 10 takeaways from Stringer’s presentation and post-video Q&A (listen to the full program on the Sony Corp. site).

A billion-plus to invest

Sony has gone on a bit of a shopping spree in recent years, with big-ticket items bought including AWAL, the artist and neighboring rights services company that functions as a supplement to The Orchard. In hindsight, the price tag for the Orchard, Sony’s label-services company, which itself distributes 26,000 labels, looks like a bargain as top-selling acts like BTS came in through the system. The growing DIY market also boosts Sony’s bottom line, as the company’s roster has expanded by 40% over the past three years, strengthened by the AWAL acquisition.

Streaming revenues inching towards 75%

As streaming revenue continues to drive the industry’s growth, accounting for 83% of recorded music revenue in 2020, according to the RIAA. At Sony, it’s hit 68% of total revenue and is likely to reach the 75% mark in the coming quarters.

Artist signings remain competitive — and expensive

Stringer noted that Sony is “aggressively investing in new talent,” along with M&A. Multi-million-dollar deals for new artists, along with shared master rights, are increasingly the norm, putting pressure on labels to deliver hit songs. To that end, SMG has been competitive in launching the likes of The Kid Laroi and Lil Nas X and in delivering two massive radio smashes in Harry Styles’ “Adore You” and “Watermelon Sugar.”

Spotify surge

As mentioned above, Sony’s average weekly share of Spotify’s worldwide top 100 tracks grew to 36%, over the fiscal year, up from 28% in FY 2019. Top Sony streamers on the platform included Harry Styles, Bad Bunny and Future. Sony also claims the highest share of new recorded music artists entering the U.S. streaming chart for the first time at nearly 30%. Those include the likes of Powfu, Giveon and Tate McRae. Sony anticipates 1 billion paid subscriptions by 2030.

Lazy loaded image

Publishing power

According to SMG data, the former Sony/ATV Music Publishing, now Sony Music Publishing, had a 27% average weekly share of Spotify’s worldwide top 100 during FY 2020, up from 24% the year before. That had meant participation in the publishing of some 58 of those songs. SMP chairman Jon Platt appeared in the presentation as well; his team is responsible for an uptick in publishing growth to the tune of +5.2% overall and +35.5% digital. Sony has been the top publisher, according to revenue, since 2012.

Catalogs still bubbling

Noting that $7 billion was spent on catalog acquisition just in the first four months in 2021, and with valuations for hit songs currently at multiples of 20x – 35x, the sector remains among the more robust of entertainment assets currently making their way through the SPAC and private equity worlds. Sony has put itself in the ring, announcing a handful of recorded-music and publishing catalog acquisitions, including Paul Simon and John Mellencamp.

China and India lead emerging markets; Latin explodes

Sony is already a market leader in Latin America, with a 35% share of recorded music market and demonstrating 15% growth year over year. Brazil happens to be the biggest and most explosive markets in the world currently, making Sony’s recent investment in Som livre, the leading independent music label in the country, particularly prescient. Elsewhere around the globe, SMG boasts 34% growth in China, is a leader among the majors in India and has seen significant penetration of markets in Russia, Nigeria, Philippines and Israel.

Podcast subs are coming

Sony anticipates a subscription model for podcasts and has already invested heavily in the growing audio sector, which is expected to register $1.6 billion in advertising worldwide in the coming year, via joint ventures and an in-house podcast division.

Lazy loaded image

When the competition goes public…

Ever the statesman, Stringer was asked about competitors Warner Music Group (WMG) and Universal Music Group (UMG) each heading towards IPOs. To that, the Sony chief pointed to outpacing the industry overall in recent years. “Our metrics are more positive than our competitors,” Stringer said, noting that there is an understanding and respect among the majors. “It’s been three big companies for a long time,” he remarked. “Obviously there are nuances, [but] we have caught up quickly in challenges we may have faced just two years ago.” Ultimately, Stringer offered, “We’ll learn from their IPOs.”

“Content shapes culture”

Between video games, films, social and digital media, the greater Sony family can tap into a multitude of synergistic opportunities, as it has with Travis Scott serving as brand ambassador for the PlayStation 5 console (the campaign generated over 1 billion impressions) as well as a performer within the Fortnite universe. Sony also takes seriously its place as an influencer of culture. Said Stringer: “Content shapes culture. … Every idea has to be different. We want to be innovative. We have to be ahead of the game.”
