Sony Master Series XR-83A90J Review - PCMag

sony.indah.link

Sony is no stranger to OLED TVs, and impressed us with the Master A9G Series when we tested it two years ago. The Master Series A90J is Sony's latest flagship OLED model, as well as its best TV to date. It’s one of the brightest OLED panels we’ve had in the lab, with one of the widest color gamuts. And it offers advanced features including far-field microphones for hands-free Google Assistant voice control and an XR Sound system that's good enough to replace a dedicated soundbar. It’s undoubtedly pricey at $2,999.99 for the 55-inch XR-55A90J we tested, but it’s a worthy home theater splurge that easily earns our Editors' Choice award.

Editors' Note: This review is based on testing performed on the XR-55A90J, the 55-inch model in the series. Apart from the screen-size difference, the $7,999.99 83-inch XR-83A90J is identical in features, and we expect similar performance.

A Premium Design

The A90J is a slim, simple, and stylish. The glass of the OLED panel runs edge to edge, with only a quarter-inch black border around the active picture. The bottom of the screen holds the only bezel, a similarly narrow brushed metal strip that holds the TV’s far-field microphones and indicator light. The aluminum-laminated OLED panel is only a fraction of an inch thick, though the back of the TV thickens out to 1.6 inches of plastic casings for the electronics that drive the screen, and the two actuators mounted behind the panel that provide the sound.

Sony Master Series A90J

Two narrow, rectangular, gunmetal feet keep the A90J upright on flat surfaces. By default, the feet simply hold the TV stable, with the bottom of the screen nearly flush with your entertainment console. The feet can also be rotated to lift the TV up a few inches, in case you want to place a soundbar under it. The 83-inch model has a third configuration that moves the feet from the edges of the TV closer to the middle, so you can place the big screen on a surface that isn’t as wide as it is.

All ports and connections, except for the power cable, sit on the left side of the back of the TV. An HDMI port, two USB ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 3.5mm combination composite video input and center speaker channel input, a 3.5mm remote receiver, and a pair of speaker terminals for the center speaker channel face left. The center speaker channel inputs let you connect an A/V receiver to use the TV’s built-in speakers to serve as the center channel for a larger surround system. Three more HDMI ports, another USB port, an Ethernet port, a 3.5mm RS-232C port, an optical audio output, and an antenna/cable connector face downward, just past the left-facing ports. Two of the HDMI ports (3 and 4) are 4K120-capable; the other two only support 4K60.

Sony Master Series A90J

The included remote is button-laden but elegant, thanks to a brushed metal plate on top giving it a sense of premium quality. It’s a long, slim wand with a circular navigation pad in the middle. A number pad and dedicated service buttons for Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Netflix, and YouTube sit above the navigation panel, along with a Google Assistant button and a pinhole microphone. Volume and channel rockers and playback controls sit below the pad. It feels comfortable in the hand, and connects wirelessly to the TV so you don’t need direct line of sight to use it.

Google TV and Google Assistant

Sony is moving on from Android TV as its preferred smart platform in favor of Google TV. It’s effectively an upgraded, streamlined version of Android TV, providing largely the same apps, services, and features, but with a friendlier interface that more readily aggregates and recommends content.

All of the big streaming services are here, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Twitch, and YouTube. You can mirror your phone, tablet, or computer screen to the TV using Apple AirPlay or Google Cast.

Sony Master Series A90G

Google TV also provides access to Google Assistant. It lets you use voice commands to control compatible smart home devices (which includes virtually all major smart home brands at this point) and the TV itself, search for content to watch or listen to, and get general information like weather reports and sports scores.

Google Assistant is a standard feature on all televisions that use Android TV or Google TV, often accessed by pressing and holding the Google Assistant button on the remote and speaking into the microphone on it. And you can do this with the A90J, but you don’t have to, as the A90J features far-field microphones that let you use Google Assistant simply by saying, “OK, Google,” without pressing any buttons. It’s very useful if you want to just tell the TV what to do without picking up the remote. If you’re concerned about privacy, the microphone can be manually cut off using a switch on the back of the TV.

Sony Master Series A90J Performance

The Sony A90J is a 4K OLED TV with a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports high dynamic range (HDR) content in HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision.

We test TVs using a Klein K-80 colorimeter, a Murideo SIX-G signal generator, and Portrait Displays’ Calman software with methodologies based on Imaging Science Foundation’s calibration techniques.

As an OLED TV, the A90J can’t get as bright as modern high-end LED-backlit LCD TVs. However, Sony is pushing the technology’s brightness as far as it can with new panel engineering and its OLED XR Contrast Pro image processing. With an HDR10 signal, the A90J shows a peak brightness of 180.833cd/m^2 with a full-screen field of white. This is unimpressive, though normal for an OLED panel completely lit up. OLEDs get significantly brighter the less area that needs to be fully illuminated, and with an 18% field of white, the TV’s peak brightness jumps to 632.348cd/m^2. With a 10% field, it shoots up even higher to 775.534cd/m^2.

This still isn’t as bright as high-end LCD TVs like the Hisense H9G (1,146.921cd/m^2), but it’s very bright for OLED. And since it’s an OLED, it can produce perfect black levels for an effective “infinite” contrast, something LCDs can't do.

Sony Master Series A90J

The A90J truly excels at color, especially for HDR content. The above chart shows color levels with an SDR signal compared with Rec.709 broadcast standards, and with an HDR signal compared with DCI-P3 digital cinema standards, both using the TV’s Cinema picture mode. SDR colors are balanced and accurate out of the box, with reds and greens shooting a bit further in range for a slightly more vivid picture than usual. HDR colors, meanwhile, cover almost the entire DCI-P3 color space. Greens fall a little short and reds overshoot a bit, but the TV still demonstrates incredible range. The only complaints for out-of-the-box color performance are that whites run a little pink and yellows somewhat red, but they’re very minor divergences.

See How We Test TVs

BBC’s Planet Earth II looks gorgeous on the A90J. Colors are vibrant and saturated while still looking natural, from the greens of leaves to the blues of water. The excellent contrast and color make the picture look downright lifelike. Fine details like fur and bark are crisp and clear, and can be easily discerned whether they’re in bright sunlight or dark shade.

Deadpool also looks excellent on the A90J, with the red of Deadpool’s costume appearing vivid under the overcast light of the opening scene. The burning lab fight shows off the TV’s strong contrast, with shadow details coming through clearly in the darkness against the bright light of the flames.

The party scenes in The Great Gatsby really shine on the A90J. The cuts of black suits and the textures of dark hair are all clear, even with the sharply contrasting whites in the same frames. Skin tones look saturated and natural against the otherwise sharply monochrome sets.

We test input lag using an HDFury Diva HDMI matrix to measure the amount of time between when a TV receives a signal and the screen updates. In Cinema mode, the A90J shows an input lag of 151.9 milliseconds, which is far too high to be comfortable. However, switching to the Game picture mode makes that lag drop to just 9.9ms. That’s less than half of the 20ms threshold we use to consider a TV to be among the best for gaming.

Sony Master Series A90J

Standout Sound

Speakers are usually a perfunctory aspect of a TV, typcially a set of downward-firing drivers a handful of watts each to provide enough sound to easily hear what you’re watching. Sony put more thought than this into the A90J’s XR Sound system, combining conventional drivers with actuators mounted behind the screen. The TV features a pair of 10-watt actuators for higher frequencies and a pair of 20-watt drivers for lower frequencies, for more audio power than typical TVs.

The actuators serve a much more immersive purpose than simply providing crisp sound. The sounds they generate seem to come directly from the screen, rather than simply the general area of the TV. The result is audio that better matches exactly what you’re watching, and a capable center channel that can be integrated into a surround sound system.

To help improve the effect, the A90J features an auto-calibration process where the TV plays a series of tones that the microphone in the remote measures from your main viewing location in the room, and then adjusts the tuning of the speakers based on the acoustics it picks up. It sounds good enough that you can think twice about adding a soundbar, though it lacks the power of a soundbar and subwoofer combination.

An OLED Worth Splurging On

The Sony Master Series A90J is a fantastic example of a flagship OLED TV. It’s very expensive, yes, but it offers an excellent picture with plenty of brightness for an OLED panel and one of the widest color gamuts we’ve seen in any TV. It’s also packed full of features thanks to Google TV and its far-field microphones, including hands-free Google Assistant voice control. Throw in strong audio and gaming performance, and the A90J easily earns our Editors’ Choice award.

If you want a good picture and lots of features, but don’t want to spend nearly as much money, check out the aforementioned Hisense H9G. It uses Android TV, which is a bit less streamlined than Google TV, but it also offers hands-free Google Assistant and provides very strong picture quality, including much higher brightness than any consumer OLED is capable of. You can also consider Vizio’s OLED TV series, which isn’t as bright as the A90J and doesn’t have quite as many smart features (and no voice assistant), but still offers an excellent picture for less than half the price.

In fiscal 2020, revenues grew 8.9% year over year to ¥8,999.4 billion, mainly driven by substantial increase in sales in the Game & Network Services (G&NS) and Financial Services segments. The momentum was partially offset by a decrease in sales in the Pictures segment.

Quarterly Segment Results

G&NS sales grew 52.3% year over year to ¥660.3 billion, driven by an increase in game software sales including add-on content and hardware sales related to the launch of PlayStation 5. The segment’s operating income was ¥33 billion compared with ¥46.2 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Music sales increased 26.5% year over year to ¥267.4 billion, driven by higher revenues from streaming services for recorded music and sales for visual media and platform. Operating income was ¥40.6 billion, which improved from ¥30.3 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Pictures sales fell 39.2% year over year to ¥200.2 billion. This was due to a decrease in theatrical revenues resulting from theater closures due to COVID-19 and lower sales for television productions due to lower deliveries of new shows. Operating income was ¥1.8 billion compared with ¥23 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Electronics Products & Solutions (EP&S) sales came in at ¥435.2 billion, up 19.8% year over year, driven by an increase in sales of televisions due to an improvement in the product mix. Operating loss was ¥11.5 billion compared with a loss of ¥59.5 billion in the year-ago quarter, driven by reductions in operating costs mainly within mobile communications.

Imaging & Sensing Solutions (I&SS) sales were up 0.5% year over year to ¥232.3 billion. Operating income was ¥20.2 billion compared with ¥34.5 billion in the prior-year quarter. The decline was due to an increase in research and development expenses, depreciation and amortization charges and a negative impact of foreign exchange rates.

Financial Services sales jumped 126.9% year over year to ¥422.9 billion, driven by a significant increase in revenues at Sony Life and improvement in valuation gains and losses on securities at Sony Bank. Operating income was ¥27.1 billion compared with ¥12.1 billion in the year-ago quarter.

All Other sales were up 31.4% to ¥53.5 billion. Operating loss was ¥3.5 billion compared with a loss of ¥4.2 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Sony's Full-Year Results Buoyed by Games, Music, Film Units - Hollywood Reporter

sony.indah.link

The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant sold a record 7.8 million PlayStation 5 units for the fiscal year.

Sony's annual results were buoyed by stellar early sales for its PlayStation 5 games console and brisk business for its music unit. The company's film division saw its full-year profit rise, but earnings fell in the final quarter of the fiscal year ended in March compared to the same period a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant reported that net income for fiscal year 2020 grew 101 percent to $10.7 billion (1.17 trillion yen) with operating income growing 15 percent to $8.9 billion (971.9 billion yen). Sony's total sales increased 9 percent to $82.5 billion (9 trillion yen).

Sony's standout entertainment unit for the fiscal year was Games & Network Services, which includes the PlayStation Plus subscriber network. The company sold 3.3 million PS5 consoles in the fourth quarter which ended in March, to give a running total of 7.8 million units sold for the fiscal year. Despite component shortages hampering production and delivery, the PS5 was selling at a faster pace than the Ps4.

For fiscal 2020, G&NS saw sales climb to $24.4 billion (2,656 billion yen), up 103.8 percent. In the fourth quarter, revenue grew 34 percent to $6 billion (660.3 billion yen), with operating income at $302 million (33 billion yen) with sales turbocharged by the launch of the PS5 and related peripherals and accessories as well as a boost to PlayStation Plus subscriber numbers the new hardware brought in.

Sony's pictures unit, which includes film and television, saw sales dive 253 percent in fiscal 2020 to $6.94 billion (758.8. billion yen) as the pandemic put paid to theatrical releases of its films, and stymied production at its lucrative television studios. Despite the drag of COVID-19, the company reported savings in marketing and promotion and higher home entertainment sales, allowing the film unit to grow operating income from $628 million to $762 million for the year.

In the fourth quarter ending in March, the film unit saw sales drop 129 percent to $1.89 billion as the company's theatrical business missed out on the lucrative holiday season due to lockdowns the world over. Sony's fourth-quarter film profit fell from $208 million to $21 million.

For the just-started new fiscal year, Sony forecast a film unit revenue gain of 50 percent amid a reopening of cinemas and a rebound in TV licensing, with film profits expected to rise 3 percent.

The music division saw sales grow 90 percent to $8.63 billion (939.9 billion yen) for fiscal 2020 with operating income hitting an impressive $1.73 billion (188.1 billion yen). In the fourth quarter, the music unit posted a 56 percent uplift in revenue, reaching $2.45 billion (267.4 billion yen).

The music segment benefitted from an increase in streaming revenues, asset sales as well as the roaring success of Demon Slayer, the anime movie which became Japan's biggest ever box office hit. Aniplex, the production company behind Demon Slayer, is an anime and music division of Sony Music Entertainment Japan.

Sony publishes full year report, PlayStation is doing great, profits from Xperia phones improving - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

sony.indah.link

Sony published its financial report for the full year 2020. The PlayStation 5 edged out the PS4 in terms of early sales and there's strong demand for games and additional services. The situation in the mobile division is improving, but the image sensor division suffered collateral damage from the US-China trade war.

The smartphone business marks a small decline to 2.9 million Xperias sold during 2020, down from 3.2 million the previous year. Note: Sony’s financial year starts in April, so Q3 is the holiday quarter. That quarter saw sales drop from 1.3 million last year down to 1.0 million. Q4 is the January-March period, which matched the year ago performance with 0.4 million units sold.

The good news operating revenue for those three months is actually slightly higher, going from JPY 70,380 million to JPY 74,150 million. This means a higher Average Selling Price (ASP) per unit.

Sony publishes full year report, PlayStation is doing great, profits from Xperia phones improving

Even better, Sony is continuing to reduce the operating costs of its mobile division. This led to a profit of JPY 27,671 million, up from a loss of JPY 21,057 million for the same period last year. All of this helped the whole Electronics division to increase its operating income (the former Sony Mobile a couple of other divisions were merged into Electronics).

Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles during the January-March period, bringing the total so far to 7.8 million. This is slightly higher than the PS4 managed in a comparable time period after its launch and Sony is still working on increasing production to meet demand. And it’s not just that, the company was selling the PlayStation 5 for less than it costs to make (which is typical for consoles in the early months of availability).

Sony publishes full year report, PlayStation is doing great, profits from Xperia phones improving

Good ol’ PS4 is actually doing quite well too, with 1.0 million sales in that quarter and 5.7 million for the full year. The fifth generation model still has a long way to go to match the PS4, which has lifetime sales of over 100 million.

Strong sales of the PS5, combined with increased game sales (including add-on content) and higher PlayStation Plus sales brought the total sales to JPY 2.66 trillion, up 34% compared to last year. The operating revenue increased to JPY 342.2 billion.

Combined PS4 and PS5 game sales reached a total of 338.9 million during the full fiscal year, of which 58.4 million (17%) came from Sony’s own game studios.

Sony’s entertainment division is doing well with the Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – the Movie: Mugen Train grabbing headlines by becoming the highest-grossing film in Japan, highest-grossing Japanese film and highest-grossing anime film of all time.

Sony’s image sensor division took a hit – it had to write down JPY 7.2 billion worth of inventory because shipments were suspended by US export restrictions. In other words, those were meant for Huawei.

The company also marks an overall decrease in sales of image sensors (ones for smartphones and ones for digital cameras) and it spent more or R&D. This reduced the operating income to JPY 145.9 billion.

Sony's profit zooms to record on video games, 'Demon Slayer' - The Associated Press

sony.indah.link

TOKYO (AP) — Sony’s January-March profit zoomed eight-fold to 107 billion yen ($982 million) from a year earlier as people stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic turned to the Japanese electronics and entertainment company’s video games and other visual content.

Sony Corp. reported Wednesday a record profit of 1.17 trillion yen ($11 billion) for the fiscal year that ended March 31, roughly doubling from 582 billion yen the previous fiscal year.

The popularity of the “Demon Slayer” animation film also helped, along with solid sales in mobile game applications and digital content. Demand persists for the PlayStation 5 game console, which went on sale last year. Sony said it has sold 7.8 million PlayStation 5 machines globally.

Tokyo-based Sony’s quarterly sales rose 27% from 1.7 trillion yen to 2.2 trillion yen ($20 billion). Sony had reported a January-March profit of 12.6 billion yen last year.

Sony’s financial services division, including banking and insurance, also contributed to healthy profits and sales for the fiscal year.

Among the top-selling Sony musical artists in the latest fiscal year were Harry Styles, AC/DC, Luke Combs and Doja Cat.

But Sony projected a 44% decline in profit for the fiscal year through March 2022, at 660 billion yen ($6 billion), as factors that boosted profit for the fiscal year just ended, such as the megahit “Demon Slayer,” would be missing.

Sales for the fiscal year through March 2022 were expected to rise nearly 8% to 9.7 trillion yen ($89 billion), as movie theaters reopening with the pandemic subsiding in some regions would help its motion pictures business.

The company also expects increased revenue from licensing the TV show “Seinfeld.”

Sony said its bottom line was supported by its strong intellectual property content and lucrative acquisitions, part of its transition from mostly manufacturing electronics products like TVs and Walkman recorders to delivering a variety of entertainment. ___

Sony has sold 7.8 million PS5 consoles - The Verge

sony.indah.link

Sony has sold 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles as of March 31st, the company says in its latest earnings report. The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers is now 47.6 million, a 14.7 percent increase year on year. The fourth-quarter figures bring the overall PlayStation business to a total operating profit of 342.2 billion yen ($3.14 billion) for the 2020 financial year — a record for Sony.

Sony’s last earnings report revealed that the company had shipped 4.5 million PS5 units worldwide through the end of 2020. That means that 3.3 million units were shipped from January to March, giving an idea of Sony’s current manufacturing capacity; it’s still very difficult to actually buy a PS5, with demand far outstripping supply. The quarter-to-quarter drop is likely explained by Sony ramping up production ahead of the system’s launch.

Earlier this month NPD said that the PS5 was the fastest selling console in US history through its first five months of availability, both in terms of units moved and total dollar spend. For the first quarter of 2021, however, Nintendo has sold more Switch units in the US than Sony has of the PS5, according to NPD. That’s not really surprising given how hard it’s been to find a PS5 since the initial launch batch.

Sony also shipped an additional million PS4 consoles in the last quarter, bringing that system’s life-to-date number to 115.9 million units. The figure is down 28.6 percent from the previous year’s 1.4 million. Sony’s report suggests PS5 is selling a little faster than the PS4 worldwide — the PS4 had shipped 7.6 million units as of March 31st, 2014.
